Conditioning & Commissioning Screed for Underfloor Heating; Why It Matters…

01st April

If your project includes underfloor heating, it’s essential to thermally prepare your floors before laying the final floor finish. This process, known as conditioning and commissioning the screed, ensures the floor is stable, durable, and ready to perform as expected.

What Is Screed Conditioning & Commissioning?

A Conditioning & Commissioning Programme uses the underfloor heating system to gradually heat the screed in a controlled manner. Here’s how it works:

  • Gradual Heating, the system slowly increases the temperature each day until it reaches the target level.
  • Temperature Hold – the screed is maintained at this peak temperature for several days to allow for proper thermal expansion.
  • Controlled Cooling – the temperature is then gradually reduced, returning to the original starting point.

Why Is This Process Important?

Screed expands and contracts with temperature changes. Without proper conditioning, sudden shifts in temperature can cause thermal shock, leading to:

  • Cracking, sudden expansion and contraction create internal stress, causing fractures.
  • Curling, uneven drying and temperature changes can lift the edges of the screed.
  • De-bondings, inadequate preparation can weaken the bond between the screed and floor finish, leading to failures down the line.

By conditioning and commissioning the screed before the final floor finish is installed, you minimize these risks and create a stable, long-lasting surface.
